LAS history professor’s lecture featured on C-SPAN’s 'American History' TV series
C-SPAN selected Pamela Riney-Kehrberg, professor of history, to feature in its "American History" TV series. The lecture, focused on how Americans addressed the need for food during the Great Depression, aired on C-SPAN 3 on Dec. 30, 2017, but you can watch a video.
World Health Organization classification of gaming addiction will help boost treatment
The recent decision by the World Health Organization to classify video game addiction as a mental health disorder will improve the ability of professionals to treat many types of mental health issues, according to LAS professor of psychology Douglas Gentile. The classification will help mental health professionals recognize the addiction, instead of regarding the behavior as a personal fault or symptom. Gentile is a global expert on the effects of gaming.
Mathematics department expands efforts to provide a nurturing environment for women
Led by LAS mathematics professor Leslie Hogben, the Iowa State chapter of Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) collaborated with Mathematics of Color Alliance (MOCA) to host a speaker series. The series and other efforts that provide students with access to mentors and role models help promote the increase and success of women in both mathematics and graduate school.
Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust supports LAS research to combat drug resistance
Vincenzo Venditti, assistant professor of chemistry, will receive support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust for his research which looks beyond antibiotics to fight human disease.
